What the Environment Authority charges

The Ad Dimaniyat Islands are a protected reserve, and Oman charges per person per day to enter it. The published rates for non-Omani visitors are OMR 3 for a day visit, OMR 6 if the day includes diving and OMR 10 if it includes an overnight stay; children under 16 pay OMR 1, or OMR 3 with an overnight. Omani nationals pay OMR 1, OMR 3 and OMR 5, with 100 baisa for children.

At 1 OMR to $2.60, that is about $7.80 for a snorkeling day. Longer permits exist for repeat visitors: OMR 30 for three months, OMR 100 for a year. Applications go through the Environment Authority's electronic system and are issued instantly when the paperwork is in order.

Who has already paid it for you

On a booked trip the operator normally buys permits in bulk and folds them into the fare. Eight of the nine listings compared on this site say so in writing, in five different wordings, "entry permits to Daymaniyat", "islands permits", "National Park fees", "Ministry of Environment snorkeling permits", "Ministry permit and island entry fees".

The exception is the most-booked listing of all, the $63 brunch trip, whose inclusions run boat, guide, gear, snacks, soft drinks and sandwiches with towels excluded, and no permit line either way. Budget the OMR 3 there until the operator confirms otherwise. If you are chartering a boat privately, the permit is entirely yours to arrange in advance.

The local rate is not the bargain it sounds like

Muscat operators publish half-day snorkeling trips at 30 OMR per adult and 18 OMR for children up to 12, with under-fours free; the full-day version is 45 OMR adult and 25 OMR for a 12-year-old. Both include light refreshments, water, juice, a sandwich, fruit, snorkeling equipment and the Ministry permit, and both exclude hotel pickup.

Convert those and the half day is about $78, more than six of the nine booked seats on this site, and $18 more than the cheapest. Independent travellers who surveyed operators in person were quoted 22 to 30 OMR, roughly $57 to $78, so the two channels overlap rather than one undercutting the other.

What cash does buy is flexibility: you can negotiate, you can ask for a smaller boat, and you can rebook on the spot when the sea is rough. What it costs you is the free-cancellation window and the review record.

Children, and where the discounts actually are

The booked listings on this site are priced per adult and mostly do not publish a child rate at all, the Seeb Marina trip takes children from three and the morning or afternoon trip from six, but both charge the adult fare unless a child option appears at checkout.

Local operators are more explicit: 18 OMR for a child up to 12 on a half day against 30 OMR for an adult, a 40% discount, and free for under-fours. For a family of four with two young children, that gap can outweigh everything else on this page. Ask before you book online, because the child rate is the one thing the platform listings are consistently quiet about.

The arithmetic

Private charters here are priced per boat, not per person. Published Muscat rates run 230 OMR for up to 10 guests, 250 OMR for up to 12, 280 OMR for up to 15 and 330 OMR for up to 20. Booking platforms carry the same product at $950 to $1,800 per group depending on boat and duration.

Against a $70 shared seat, 230 OMR (about $598) breaks even at roughly eight or nine people. Below that you are paying a premium for privacy; above it you are saving money and getting your own departure time, your own itinerary and no strangers' fins in your face.

One first-hand account puts the trade plainly: a couple quoted around 250 OMR for a private boat called it prohibitive for two, and took a 14-passenger shared boat instead, which then ran the standard route in reverse and had both snorkel sites almost to itself. Group size on a shared boat matters more than the word "private".

What is not in the charter price

Permits. A private booking does not automatically come with reserve entry, check whether the operator files for it or whether that is on you, because the reserve is patrolled and an unpermitted boat does not get in.

Fuel surcharges on longer itineraries, food beyond the standard sandwiches, and hotel transfers are also usually separate. Compare the total, not the headline: the $99 BBQ boat with lunch cooked on board can beat a bare charter once you have fed eight people.

Transport to the boat

Eight of the nine trips compared here exclude hotel pickup outright, and the Seeb Port short trip offers it with "charges applicable". Seeb is about 30 km from central Muscat, a 25 to 30 minute drive, with free parking reported at the marina; Al Mouj sits inside the city. There is no useful public transport to either, and one reviewer with an app-hailed taxi found getting home from the port harder than getting there.

Budget a return taxi. It is the second-largest line on most people's day after the ticket itself, and it does not appear in any tour price.

Cameras, towels and the small stuff

Two listings put a camera in the price: the GoPro trip at $70 hands you one for the day, and the kayak day at $80 includes crew-shot photos and video. Elsewhere underwater photography is an add-on, the morning or afternoon trip sells it "at extra cost".

Towels are excluded on the brunch trip and the kayak day and unmentioned on most of the rest. Sunscreen is on every what-to-bring list and nobody's inclusions. Neither is expensive; both are annoying to buy at a marina.

Two adults, one snorkeling day

Two seats on the $60 Seeb Marina morning trip is $120 with the permit already inside. Add a return taxi from central Muscat, realistically $30 to $45 for the pair, and sunscreen you brought with you. The day lands at roughly $150 to $165 for two, and finishes at 13:00 with the afternoon still free.

Swap to the $99 BBQ boat and the same day is $198 plus the taxi, or about $230 to $245, with lunch cooked on board and showers at the dive centre. That is the real spread: $80 for two, buying food and facilities rather than more water.

A family of four with two children under 12

Booked online, most listings charge the adult fare for everyone, so four seats on a $62 trip is $248 before transport. Arranged locally at the published Muscat rates, 30 OMR adult, 18 OMR child, the same half day is 96 OMR, about $250. Effectively identical.

The difference shows up at the edges. Online you get free cancellation up to 24 hours before, a review record and a stated minimum age; locally you may get a child discount, a smaller boat and a captain who will move the trip a day when the wind is up. For a family travelling in the summer wind season, that flexibility is worth more than the few dollars between them.
